TRC86 is a project undertaken by data journalism students at Seneca college to better understand and cover stories relating to Indigenous peoples and issues in Canada today. TRC86 refers to the 86th call to action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report, which calls on Canadian journalism schools to “require education for all students on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations.” The multimedia projects presented on this site cover a wide range of topics including the loss of Indigenous languages, food insecurity in Indigenous communities, and the power of celebrity endorsements in Indigenous protests.
